Particle Board vs MDF for Furniture Manufacturing

2026/09/21

Laatste bedrijfsnieuws over Particle Board vs MDF for Furniture Manufacturing
Comparison Item Particle Board MDF
Surface quality Relatively coarse texture. Direct painting is not recommended; melamine/laminate veneer is required for finished appearance. Extremely smooth, uniform surface. Excellent for painting, veneering, CNC routing and complex carved profiles.
Density & Weight Lower density, lighter weight, easy for flat‑pack furniture packing & shipping. Higher density, heavier. More transportation cost for finished goods; better dimensional uniformity.
Screw‑holding & Load‑bearing Weak screw‑holding capacity especially on panel edges. Screws tend to strip out after repeated disassembly. Prone to sagging under heavy load. Better face‑screw holding than particle board. Suitable for medium‑load furniture; edge‑screw strength is still limited, edge‑reinforcement is recommended.
Moisture resistance Poor. Standard particle board swells severely and degrades quickly once contacting water; only HMR‑grade particle board improves humidity tolerance. Still moisture‑sensitive. Ordinary MDF will swell in wet conditions; moisture‑resistant MDF is available for humid‑area projects. Neither particle board nor regular MDF suits kitchen & bathroom furniture without special treatment.
Machinability Easy straight‑cutting; easy chipping when routing complex shapes. Outstanding machinability. Perfect for CNC cutting, grooving, moulding and decorative carving without chipping edges.
Cost advantage Lowest‑cost engineered wood panel, very competitive for high‑volume budget‑oriented export orders. Higher material cost compared with particle board, positioned for mid‑to‑high‑end furniture projects.
Main furniture applications Flat‑pack furniture, wardrobe/cabinet carcass, budget‑range storage furniture, melamine‑finished mass‑production furniture. Painted cabinet doors, drawer fronts, custom‑made furniture, decorative panels, mouldings, premium display cabinets, furniture requiring fine surface finishing.
